Greene shuts out Manatees in Dunedin

Connor Greene pitched five no-hit innings for the Dunedin Blue Jays on Tuesday, leading his team to a 6-0 win at Florida Auto Exchange Stadium. Greene was masterful, striking out seven over seven innings of work, both season highs. He allowed three hits and walked two, throwing 91 pitches, 59 for strikes.

The Manatees, who were held to four hits in Monday’s series opener, followed that with a three-hit night on Tuesday. The first hit for the visitors was a double leading off the sixth inning by Dustin Houle, breaking up the no-hit bid. At that point, Dunedin was comfortably ahead.
On the other side of the ledger, it was a rough night for Manatees starter Eric Hanhold. Jonathan Davis singled to start the bottom of the first and was out when he ran into a ball hit by Richard Urena. Davis was out, but Urena was credited with a hit. One out later, Ryan McBroom doubled home Urena to make it 1-0.

Jorge Saez led the second inning off with his fourth home run of the season, on a 92 MPH fastball from Hanhold. Dickie Joe Thon and Jonathan Davis singled to keep the inning going and Urena’s sac fly made it 3-0. Mike Reeves added an RBI single in the third and Emilio Guerrero and McBroom hit back-to-back doubles in the fourth, upping the D-Jays lead to 5-0. Hanhold (2-8) allowed three hits in each of the first three innings and two more in the fourth. He was charged with five earned runs on 11 hits, walking one and striking out one. He threw 79 pitches in four frames, 49 were strikes.

Zach Hirsch took over for the Manatees in the fifth and pitched well, recording the first 1-2-3 inning for the Manatees in that frame. He did give up a run in the sixth on a ground-rule double by Jonathan Davis, who finished the night 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI. McBroom was 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI’s, pacing the Blue Jays 13-hit performance.

After Greene (4-4) finished his seven innings, a pair of MLB rehabbers pitched an inning each. Former Colorado Rockies starter Franklin Morales walked one and struck out one in the eighth and Brett Cecil struck out two Manatees in a clean ninth inning.

Clint Coulter and Elvis Rubio were the only other Manatees to get a hit against Greene. They were both singles. The first half of the Florida State League season wraps up on Wednesday with an 11:00 a.m. first pitch in Dunedin. Kodi Medeiros (3-5, 5.84 ERA) will get the start for the Manatees, against Chris Rowley (4-1, 3.20 ERA).
