Gennett Begins Rehab Assignment with Manatees

Milwaukee Brewers second baseman Scooter Gennett returned to Space Coast Stadium Tuesday, as he began his two-game rehab stint with the Brevard County Manatees. Gennett last played in Viera in 2011, appearing in 134 games and hitting .300. He had nine homers that year, to go along with 51 RBIs.

Gennett has been on the disabled list in Milwaukee since April 28, with an oblique strain. He was hitting .258 in 18 games for the Brewers before the injury and is looking for a quick return to the Brewers after he finishes his assignment with Brevard. The first of those games is in the books, as Gennett went 0-for-2 with a walk, in a 2-0 loss to Daytona on Tuesday night.

“I felt good, no pain from the oblique,” Gennett said after the game.  “I thought my at bats were pretty good, not really expecting any great results the first game back, but the good news was, I didn’t feel any pain or anything like that.”

Gennett got a good reaction from the crowd, batting second in the Manatees’ lineup. Daytona pitcher Tyler Mahle pitched carefully to him in his first at bat and Gennett drew a walk. He would fly out in his second at bat in the third inning and go down swinging in his final at bat in the sixth.

“It was great to be back,” he said. “It’s always cool to kind of get a perspective on what it was like coming up and just to be reminded of how fortunate I am to have the opportunity to play in the big eagues.” While Gennett is obviously focused on getting back to Milwaukee, first and foremost, he knows that the guys on the Manatees’ roster can benefit greatly from him being in that clubhouse.

“I can give these guys some wisdom and some insight of kinda what it’s like and the process of making it to the big leagues,” he said. “I’m not a veteran guy by any means, but I have gone through the minor leagues and I’ve seen guys go up and down. I’ve been up and down myself, so there is some knowledge to be shared and it’s kind of our duty as a player to be there for these guys.”

Brevard County manager Joe Ayrault was excited about being able to spend a couple days with Gennett, who is from his hometown of Sarasota. Ayrault talked about what Gennett’s presence meant for the team. “Having a guy like that interact with our players and talk to our players, taking ground balls with (George) Iskenderian,” he said. “It’s great for our guys just to be able to pick his brain and ask him what it’s like coming through the Minor Leagues and what it’s like in the big leagues. He’s a great kid.”

The plan is for Gennett to play one more game with the Manatees on Wednesday in Daytona and then return to Milwaukee Thursday night, when the Brewers return home to take on the Padres. “I’ll hopefully be playing in that game,” he said.
