The Brevard County Manatees salvaged the final game of a four game set at Bradenton on Monday, hanging on for a 6-4 victory at McKechnie Field.

Manatees starting pitcher Bubba Derby, who hadn’t gotten into the seventh inning in any one start this season, went eight innings Monday and earned his sixth win of the season. It was the best start for Derby in his young career.

Brevard County (4-14, 27-59) got on the board in a big way in the second inning, against Marauders starter Stephen Tarpley. Elvis Rubio singled and went to second on a passed ball. After George Iskenderian walked, another passed ball moved the runners to second and third. That brought Jose Cuas to the plate.

Cuas, who committed an error in the 11th inning Sunday, allowing Bradenton to walk off for the second straight day, atoned in a big way Monday, with a three-run big fly, giving the Manatees an early lead. The lead didn’t last long, as the Marauders tied things up in the bottom of the third.

Michael Suchy and Elvis Escobar hit back-to-back one out doubles, plating the Marauders first run. Tito Polo hit the third consecutive double, bringing Escobar home and closing the gap to 3-2. The home nine then tied the game in the top of the fourth. Chase Simpson led off with a double and later scored on Connor Joe’s sac fly.

Clint Coulter, fresh off his 5-for-6 day on Sunday, stayed hot Monday night. He came up with the bases loaded in the top of the fifth and dropped a double into left, scoring Malik Collymore and Corey Ray, making it a 5-3 game. Ray had singled, following Collymore’s walk to lead off the frame. Newcomer Wendell Rijo, playing in his second game with the Manatees, had the single ahead of Coulter’s two-run, two bagger.

The Manatees final run of the inning came on an odd sequence. Rubio followed with a grounder to Kramer at second. He fielded and threw home, getting Rijo at the plate. Rubio was safe at first. With Iskenderian batting, Rubio got caught in a rundown between first and second. Kramer looked Coulter back to third and threw to first. Rubio went toward first and Coulter broke for the plate. By the time the throw went back to third, Coulter was close enough to score and Rubio went into second. Coulter was credited with a steal of home and Rubio got credit for second base.

Bradenton (8-11, 46-41) scored their final run in the bottom of the sixth. Kevin Kramer hit the sixth double for the Marauders with one out. All six of Bradenton’s hits to that point were doubles. Joe singled moving him to third and Kramer scored on a Taylor Gushue ground out.

Derby (5-6) got through two more innings of this bend but don’t break start. He allowed seven hits and four earned runs. He walked two and struck out six, dropping his ERA to 4.93. Of the 96 pitches he threw, 63 were strikes. Brad Kuntz pitched the final inning and struck out one, without allowing a hit. His effort netted him his first save of the season.

Rijo and Coulter both went 2-for-4 on Monday, as the Manatees offense had seven hits. The only hit the Marauders had that wasn’t a double, was a single off the bat of was a single from Joe. Polo was the only Marauder with a two-hit night, both doubles.

There is a league-wide off day on Tuesday, before the Manatees return home Wednesday to take on the Jupiter Hammerheads. Game time is set for 6:30 p.m.
