DeMuth Has Four-Hit Night in Loss to Daytona

The Brevard County Manatees managed seven hits in a 12-3 loss to the Daytona Tortugas on Thursday night at Space Coast Stadium. That’s the bad news. The good news, at least from an individual standpoint, was first baseman Dustin DeMuth who went 4-for-4 with a walk, knocking in two of the Manatees three ninth inning runs.

“He’s been swinging the bat very well,” said Manatees manager Joe Ayrault. “He’s been our guy manning the three hole for a while, six hits the last two nights and a big night for him. Definitely the highlighter of the game.”

Unfortunately, the Manatees offense outside of DeMuth struggled to get things going offensively against Daytona starter Keury Mella. He allowed four hits in his six shutout innings, two of those were to DeMuth. The other knocks came off the bat of George Iskenderian (second inning) and to Clint Coulter, who doubled in the fourth inning. Mella (6-5) did walk four batters, but got through with minimal damage. He struck out three, throwing 87 pitches, 53 for strikes.

Eric Hanhold got the start for the Manatees and had it going for three innings, throwing up zeros across the board. His troubles started in the fourth inning, when a walk to Brian O’Grady was sandwiched between two strikeouts. On the second strikeout, O’Grady stole second and went to third on a wild pitch. He rode home on an Aristides Aquino single, breaking the seal on a scoreless game.

Daytona (9-3, 45-36) added another run in the fifth on two singles and an error. That run was unearned. The visitors broke things open in the sixth, scoring five runs. All of the runs came after Hanhold retired the first two in the inning. Angelo Gumbs made it a 3-0 game with a 392-foot home run to left, his seventh of the season.
Singles by Blake Butler and Chad Tromp followed and that was the end of the night for Hanhold.

Josh Uhen came on with two on and two outs. He gave up a single an RBI single to Jonathan Reynoso and an RBI double to Ronald Bueno, upping the lead to 5-0. Blake Trahan capped the scoring with a two-run single, making it 7-0.
Hanhold (2-11) was charged with five of the seven runs (four earned) in 5.2 innings of work. He allowed seven hits, struck out four and walked three. 57 of his 97 pitches were strikes. “The first three innings he was outstanding, didn’t give up a hit,” said Ayrault. “He was getting after it and then just fell behind on some hitters and had some tough luck.”

Uhen gave up another run in the seventh on an Aquino sac fly. He gave way to Kaleb Earls in the eighth and his struggles continued. Earls gave up two singles and a walk, before recording an out. He walked Trahan to load the bases and then walked O’Grady to force in a run and hit Gavin LaValley, bringing home the 10th Daytona run of the night. Brad Kuntz was then called on out of the ‘pen and allowed an RBI single to Aquino and an RBI ground out to Gumbs.

Much like they did on Wednesday against Dunedin, the Manatees put together a rally in the ninth against Daytona reliever Jeremy Kivel and were able to break up the shutout. Kivel hit Dustin Houle and walked Jose Cuas to start the inning and Malik Collymore singled to load the bases for Corey Ray, who has done such a good job in the early going with the Manatees. Unfortunately, Ray struck out swinging.

Blake Allemand followed with an RBI ground out, getting the Manatees on the board. That brought DeMuth to the plate and he laced his fourth single of the night to right field, scoring Cuas and Collymore and making it a 12-3 game. Nolan Becker was summoned from the Daytona bullpen and he got the final out, striking out Clint Coulter.

“These guys always get after it, they don’t quit,” said Ayrault. “Seems like we’ve scored the majority of our runs late in ballgames. The seventh inning on, seems like the bats really get going.”

Game notes: At the time the boxscore was linked, it had Daytona with 15 hits. The correct total is 14, as there was a late change to the fifth inning scoring. Trahan was originally given a hit, to go with the error by Allemand. That was later changed to just an error, so the hit comes off the board.

Brevard County (3-11, 26-56) now heads out on the road for a weekend series in Bradenton. The Manatees will send Kodi Medeiros (4-7, 5.43 ERA) to the mound in Friday’s opener. The Marauders will counter with Buddy Borden (0-1, 2.08 ERA). First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
