Daytona Shuts Out Brevard County, 2-0
Kodi Medeiros |
Brevard County starting pitcher Kodi Medeiros deserved a
better fate on Tuesday, getting two outs in the sixth inning before giving up
the go-ahead run in an eventual 2-0 loss to the Daytona Tortugas at Space Coast
Stadium.
Medeiros (2-4) gave up a walk and a single in the top of the
first, but was bailed out by an inning ending double play, started by Brewers’
Major League rehabber Scooter Gennett. Medeiros went on to retire the next 10
in a row, including striking out the side in the third inning.
“Once he got his rhythm going, he had some really good
stuff,” said Manatees manager Joe Ayrault. “He mixed his pitches well and came
right after them. He had a plus-fastball and threw the ball very well. It was
just an off-night for the offense, their pitchers threw very well against us.”
To Ayrault’s point, the Manatees managed just four hits, two
off the bat of leadoff man Johnny Davis. He had a double into short left field
in the top of the first against Daytona starter Tyler Mahle. Gennett followed
with a walk. The runners moved up on a wild pitch and a walk to Dustin DeMuth
would load the bases. George Iskenderian hit the ball hard on the ground, but
the Daytona infield turned it into a double play and with it went Brevard
County’s best chance of the night. “That was a big opportunity for us and we
let them off the hook,” said Ayrault.
Mahle (3-2) kept the Manatees at bay until the bottom of the
sixth, when Davis singled with one out. He would be erased on a caught stealing
moments later in the frame, but it was another two hit night for Davis, who has
been very consistent with the bat in the early going this season. “He does a
real good job,” Ayrault said of his centerfielder. He’s got some quick hands
and really good bat barrel accuracy. He gets the bat on the ball and utilizes
his speed the rest of the way.”
The Tortugas have some speed too and they utilized it in the
sixth inning. With two outs, Avain Rachal hit a ball off the wall in center and
slid into third safely. Blake Butler followed with an RBI single, giving Daytona
a 1-0 lead and ended the night for Medeiros.
He allowed six hits in 6.2 innings of work, giving up just
the one earned run. He threw 87 pitches (56 strikes). He walked one and struck
out eight, in his best performance of the young season. Watching him, you see
the maturation in the 19-year-old. That was not lost on Gennett, who had plenty
of praise for the Manatees’ hurler.
“He did a real good job after he got settled in there, his
fastball’s obviously good, throws low-to-mid 90’s,” Gennett said. “It seems
like his ball is sneakier, like it plays up more… a lot of guys were late on
it, so it’s definitely good to see. I know that the standards are high and they
(Milwaukee) expect good things out of him. He’s doing good so far, so it’s good
to see.”
The Tortugas (13-18) added a run in the top of the eighth
against Junior Rincon, who took over for Medeiros. Jonathan Reynoso drew a one
out walk and came home on a Blake Trahan RBI single, making it a 2-0 game.
