Daytona Dominates Doubleheader Against Manatees
Zach Hirsch |
The Daytona Tortugas and Brevard County Manatees returned to
the field on Wednesday, after enjoying a day off on Tuesday. The two teams
played a doubleheader at Jackie Robinson Ballpark, with the Tortugas taking
game one, 12-0 and game two 4-1, sweeping the twin bill.
Javi Salas, who was a member of the Manatees starting
rotation in 2015, returned from Double-A Biloxi on a rehab assignment, as the
game one starter. He struggled mightily in this one, as the Tortugas sent 10
men to the plate and put five runs on the board, in the bottom of the first.
Blake Trahan singled and came home on a two-run homer by
Shed Long. Salas retired the next two batters, but the next five reached and
brought Garrett Boulware to the plate with the bases loaded. He grounded to shortstop
Wendell Rijo, who short-hopped the throw past Jose Cuas at first, resulting in two
more runs and giving the home nine a 5-0 lead.
The second inning was not much better for Salas, who faced
nine more batters in the second, including five straight hits to start the
inning and three more runs for the home nine, making it an 8-0 lead after two
innings of work. Salas would not return for the third, needing 52 pitches (32
strikes to get through two innings. He gave up eight runs (six earned) on nine
hits, walked one and struck out one.
Zach Hirsch came out of the Manatees bullpen and kept the
Tortugas from adding on, striking out the first four hitters he faced. Brian
O'Grady’s single to start the bottom of the fifth was the only hit Hirsch
allowed in his three innings of work. He walked one and struck out six,
throwing 27 of his 43 pitches for strikes.
On the other side, Daytona starter Jonathon Crawford gave up
just two hits in his five innings of work. Corey Ray led off the game with a
double and Elvis Rubio singled in the top of the second. That was the extent of
the Brevard County offense in game one.
Daytona added four more in the bottom of the sixth, against
reliever Josh Uhen. The first three hitters reached, loading the bases and Reydel
Medina cleared them with a three-Run triple, making it 11-0. The final run came
on an RBI grounder by Chad Tromp.
The Tortugas ended the night with 14 hits in game one, with five
Tortugas putting up multi-hit performances. Long (3-for-4, 2 runs, 1 HR and 2
RBI’s) and Medina (3-for-4, 3 R and 4 RBIs), leading the way.

Blake Allemand |
It didn’t take the Manatees (12-27, 35-72) long to break
their scoreless streak in game two. Blake Allemand took the third pitch of the
night from Daytona starter Ismael Guillon, over the right field wall, getting
Brevard County on the board.
The Tortugas (59-47) got right back in track in the bottom
of the second with Gavin LaValley tying things up with one swing of the bat,
taking Bubba Derby deep over the left field wall. The hits just kept coming, as
the Tortugas sent nine men to the plate and tallied three more times, extending
their lead to 4-1.
Despite giving up the long ball to Allemand in the first,
Guillon settled down nicely. He struck out two Manatees in each of the first
three innings and went on to retire 14 in
a row, including striking out the side in the top of the fifth. He would not
get a chance to continue that streak, as he gave way to Juan Martinez on the
mound in the sixth.
He retired the only three batters he faced, before Daytona
closer Jimmy Herget, who closed things out despite giving up a walk to George
Iskenderian to break the streak with one out in the ninth. With that, the
Manatees dropped the second game and the sweep was complete. They have now lost
10 of 12 games.
