There were some offensive fireworks at Bright House Field on
Saturday, as a crowd of 6,201 fans watched their Clearwater Threshers and the
Brevard County Manatees hit four home runs and combine to score 13 runs in an
8-5 Threshers win.
Brevard County (1-8, 24-53) got home runs from George
Iskenderian and Clint Coulter, but could not climb out of an early hole. The
Manatees defensive struggles didn’t help, as the team committed three errors. Manatees
starter Eric Hanhold continued to struggle and continued to be on the wrong end
of things. He suffered his 10th loss of the season.
The Manatees did get off to a good start, scoring a run in
the top of the first. Omar Garcia singled to start the game against Clearwater
hurler Shane Watson. Elvis Rubio’s single two outs later, made it 1-0 Manatees.
Much like in Friday night’s game, Clearwater put four runs on the board in the
bottom of the first.
Cord Sandberg singled and Mitch Walding singled to Coulter
in right field, the ball got by him, allowing Sandberg to score and Walding to
go to third. Zach Green followed with a grounder to Blake Allemand at short and
he booted it, bringing Walding home with the second run. Kyle Martin was next
to the dish and he jacked one over the wall in left, making it a 4-1 game. It
was Martin’s 11th homer of the season. Drew Stankiewicz added
to the lead in the second inning, going yard for the first time this season.
Iskenderian hit his third homer of the season in the top of
the fourth making it 5-2, but an error on Allemand started the bottom of the
frame, allowing Jiandido Tromp to reach. He scored on a Stankiewicz single
later in the inning, giving the home team a 6-2 lead.
Brevard Country cut the lead in half in the sixth inning on
Coulter’s fourth big fly of the season.
Watson would again run into trouble in
the seventh, giving up a double to Dustin Houle, who went to third on a wild
pitch. One batter later, Garcia drew a walk, bringing the night to a close for
Watson. Allemand greeted reliever Will Morris with a two-run double, closing
the gap to 6-5.
Josh Uhen took over for Hanhold to start the bottom of the
seventh. Hanhold gave up six runs (four earned) in six innings of work. He
allowed seven hits, walked one and struck out three, throwing 58 of his 93
pitches for strikes.
The Manatees loaded the bases in the top of the eighth
against reliever Jesen Therrien. With one out, Coulter walked and Iskenderian
singled. One batter later, a wild pitch moved them to second and third, before
Dustin Houle drew a walk. Malik Collymore, who has come up with some key hits
in his time with the Manatees, got the count to 3-2 before striking out
swinging. The Manatees were within a pitch of tying the game.
That was as close as the Manatees would get, as the
Threshers added two insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth. An RBI double
by Martin scored Scott Kingery and Malquin Canelo’s single scored Martin,
capping off an eight run night for the home team. Martin, Sandberg and Stankiewicz
all had two-hit nights for the Threshers.
The Manatees, who left seven on base and went 2-for-8 with
runners in scoring position, got two-hit nights from Garcia and Iskenderian.
The series wraps up Sunday at 6:15 p.m. Kodi Medeiros (3-7,
5.98 ERA) will toe the rubber for the Manatees, against John Richy (2-3, 4.70
ERA).
