Allemand Homers in Game One Loss to Charlotte
Blake Allemand |
Boxberger, who started Thursday’s series opener went one inning on Saturday and the Manatees got to him for a run. With one out, Wendell Rijo singled and stole second, before coming home on Dustin DeMuth’s 21st double of the season and putting the visitors on top 1-0.
Charlotte came back with an unearned run in the bottom of the inning. Jake Cronenworth got things going with an infield single. Derby then got the next two outs and looked to be out of the inning when Mac James hit a fly ball to right. Manatees’ right fielder Clint Coulter took a step in on the ball off the bat and that ended costing him. The ball was hit harder than he thought and by the time he realized it, the ball hit off his glove for a two-base error. With that, the score was tied at one.
The Manatees got that run back in the top of the second inning. George Iskenderian singled and stole second. He went to third on a single from Fidel Pena. Blake Allemand hit into a twin-killing, but Iskenderian scored, giving the Manatees the lead again, 2-1.
Derby pitched well, protecting that lead into the sixth inning. Manatees manager Joe Ayrault talks a lot about how damaging leadoff walks are, as many managers do. Derby was bitten in the sixth inning, as he walked Grant Kay. He wasn’t standing at first for long, but he had a very good view of Joe McCarthy’s home run that followed, as it sailed into the Stone Crabs bullpen, putting the home team on top, 4-2.
Derby got the next three outs, getting through six, with just that one pitch being the difference for him. He gave up four runs (three earned), striking out three and walking one. He threw 60 of his 82 pitches for strikes.
Diego Castillo (2-0) came on for Pike in the bottom of the seventh, looking for his first save in the Florida State League. Fidel Pena started things with a single. Allemand came up and took Castillo deep to right, for his first home run, tying the game, 4-4. That resulted in a blown save for Castillo, who bounced back to finish the inning.
Charlotte came up in the bottom of the seventh against Manatees reliever Kender Villegas, with a chance to walk-off and that’s exactly what they did. Jace Conrad singled to start the inning and went to second on a ground out. After stealing third, Conrad came home on a sacrifice fly to right by Thomas Milone.

Villegas (5-6) took the loss, throwing just six pitches. The Manatees had seven hits in game one, with Iskenderian and Pena each went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Charlotte had six hits, with no-multi-hit performances.
