FIT Players of the Week and Weekly Update - 9/5 - 9/11

As we did last week, we will link you up with the weekly update from the Florida Tech Athletic Department in this post. First things first -- the school has announced their Players of the week for week one of the season.

On the women’s side, soccer player Keira McCarthy has been selected. She scored two goals in the Panthers victory over West Florida on Sunday.

Cornerback Manny Abad was selected as the Men’s Player of the Week, rewarded for his performance Saturday in a big 42-28 win over Newberry. Congratulations to both players.

The Florida Tech athletic department released its latest weekly update on Tuesday. The weekly update will let you know what days the Panthers teams are playing, home and away and will feature links you can use to follow the game action.

Sports Lowdown will post a link to the update every week here on the website and it will also be available on our Twitter account.

Sports Lowdown will be at the home-opener on Friday, as the football team takes on Mississippi College.

Elvis Rubio For the second straight night, the Brevard County Manatees used a four-run inning to beat the visiting Clearwater Threshers at Space Coast Stadium. On Tuesday night  it was a four-run fifth  and on Wednesday, it was the second inning that supplied more than enough for the Manatees to post a second consecutive victory.  “After the win last night to come in and have that big inning, put up for runs was big,” said Manatees skipper Joe Ayrault. “It’s always a good feeling to get the lead and put the hammer down.” The hammer came down quickly on Clearwater starter Ranfi Casimiro (5-3) in that second frame. Manatees’ Offensive Struggles Continue Against Lakeland

Junior Rincon The Brevard County Manatees were hoping a return to Space Coast Stadium on Tuesday, would be the turning point for what was a 1-7 road trip. Unfortunately, the ‘Tees offensive struggles continued in a 3-0 loss to the Lakeland Flying Tigers. Offensively, Brevard County (3-16) managed just four hits in the game, but did hit some balls hard. Starting pitcher Eric Hanhold was plagued by a high pitch count early, forcing him out of the game after four innings. He threw 83 pitches, 50 for strikes. “It wasn’t Hanhold’s usual outing,” said Manatees manager Joe Ayrault. “Usually, he’s getting ahead and tonight he had to work himself out of some jams, working behind and walking a couple guys, that’s what happens.”  Ayrault was not overly concerned with the amount of pitches his starters are throwing early, repeating something he said last week about the starters being on a pitch count until June. Florida Tech Lacrosse Upsets Fifth-Ranked Seton Hill

Nick Wynne - Photo credit: James Ragan Photography The Florida Tech men’s lacrosse team made history on Saturday, beating the fifth-ranked team in the country, Seton Hill, 5-3 in Charlotte, NC. It marks the first time Florida Tech has beaten a team ranked in the top five, in the six-year history of the program. Nick Wynne netted a hat-trick and Logan Sweeney had a goal and two assists for the Panthers. Brett Pohlmeyer also tallied in the win. Goaltender Daniel Flock made those points stand up, making 19 saves. Florida Tech (3-4) had three man-up goals in the contest and Lance Pavlina took control at the faceoff X, winning six of the 10 draws he was involved in. This was a close contest throughout, with Florida Tech jumping out to a 2-0 lead. Seton Hill cut it to one, before the Panthers struck again, securing a 3-1 halftime lead.
