The Brevard County Manatees managed just four hits Saturday night in a 2-1 loss to the Tampa Yankees, at Space Coast Stadium.
Tampa scored just one run against Manatees starter Jon Perrin, who had another sparkling outing for the Manatees, but the offense couldn’t get him a much deserved win.

“He threw the ball really well, we just didn’t get any run support behind him,” said Manatees manager Joe Ayrault.  “We got guys throwing really good games, especially Perrin. He’s probably in the top 10 in ERA in the league in pitching, doing a heck of a job, having a real good season.”

Brevard County (14-42, 37-87) did get on the board first in the bottom of the first inning. Corey Ray led off with a double and Mitch Ghelfi singled one out later, moving Ray to third. Elvis Rubio hit into a fielder’s choice at second, but the throw to first pulled Kevin Cornelius off the bag and Ray scored.

That was the only run that spot starter Sean Carley gave up in four innings of work. He allowed two hits, walked one and struck out four. Jordan Foley gave up the other two hits during his three innings.

“They threw the ball well tonight,” said Ayrault. “Their starter got scratched early in the ball game and their spot guy did a nice job.”

Perrin worked in and out of trouble in the early innings, before finally surrendering a run in the sixth. Zach Zehner hit a one out double and came home on Rashad Crawford single, tying things up at 1-1. Perrin then got a 1-2-3 inning in the seventh, before giving way to Freddy Peralta, who started the eighth.

Perrin gave up seven hits and one earned run over his seven innings. He walked one and struck out five, throwing 61 of his 88 pitches for strikes. The game remained tied until the top of the ninth. After Peralta struck out Zehner and Crawford, Cornelius knocked a double to left and came home on a Jeff Hendrix single.

After Tampa reliever Caleb Frare struck Rubio out to start the bottom of the ninth, Dustin Houle drew a walk and was lifted for pinch runner Fidel Pena. Wendell Rijo and Cuas suffered the same fate as Rubio and the game was over.

Ghelfi had the only two hit night for the Manatees, finishing 2-for-4, with a double. “He has great hand-eye coordination and uses the whole field well from both sides of the plate,” said Ayrault. “Swinging a good bat.”

The Manatees have one more chance to snap what is now an 11-game losing streak on this homestand. That comes Sunday at 5:05 p.m. Cody Ponce will toe the rubber for Brevard County.
