Jaguars Roster Trimmed to 75

The Jacksonville Jaguars cut their roster to the required 75 players, ahead of Tuesday’s 4:00 p.m. deadline. James Sample was placed on injured reserve, while Nic Jacobs and Bjoern Werner were released.

Those moves follow the earlier dismissal of LB Joplo Bartu, WR Shaq Evans, K Sam Ficken, CB Mike Hilton, RB Cameron Marshall, CB Demetrius McCray, P Ryan Quigley, WR Jamal Robinson, TE Nic Jacobs, DE Bjoern Werner, S Earl Wolf (waived/injured) were cut.

Sample, who was injured last season, was hurt again in the preseason opener against the Jets. OL Jeff Linkenbach (concussion) were placed on injured reserve. OL Luke Bowanko and DL Jonathan Woodard were placed on PUP.

There is one more roster cut coming, when the team must go from 75, to 53 by September 1 at 4:00 p.m. That final cut will likely include some familiar names, as the team was less than impressive in Sunday’s win against the Bengals.

Yes, it’s preseason, but it was the third preseason game, which is the longest look that the coaching staff gets at the first team offense and to say that they were less than impressive, would be putting it kindly. Talk shows in the last couple days, have dialed back their expectations of this team, based on Sunday’s perfor
mance.

Quarterback Blake Bortles did not mince words, following the game. “We kind of killed ourselves, we did some stupid things, really at every position,” he said. There’s no way to sugarcoat that and he said much the same thing in his sideline interview soon after the starters came out.

Penalties, which have been a consistent problem for this team, has continued to snowball. That could be blamed on a lot of factors when you’re talking preseason, but it carries into the regular season every year. Judging by the way this season has started, that shows no signs of slowing down.

Bortles said in the interview that they needed to watch the film and get things cleaned up. He said he was glad it was the preseason. That’s all well-and-good, but there is only one preseason game left, which happens Thursday. The starters will not play much, if at all. That leaves even less time to get things cleaned up.

Add to that, the fact that the schedule does them no favors, with their opener against the Green Bay Packers. With San Diego, Baltimore and Indianapolis to follow, the Jaguars have a very real chance of falling into a 1-3 hole that they will have to work all season to dig out of. That’s not something they can afford.

Gus Bradley has a small window to get this team buttoned up, but it can be done. The talent is there, they just need to stop shooting themselves in the foot, preseason, regular season or anytime in between.
